The Bariatric Patient and “Set Point”

Posted by admin - July 9th, 2008

New Bariatric patients often ask this basic question: “How do I determine my goal weight?”

The SET POINT:

Each person has his/her own “set point” that the body has programmed deep inside which lets the body know the amount of weight it wants to maintain. Basically, this “set point” was established near puberty; so based on if you were a slim or chubby child approaching puberty, this will determine what your set point” is.

Think back to when you were in your pre-teen years and then what type of body (slim or overweight) you had as you entered puberty. This will give you an idea of what your body would be comfortable at weighing again…. Of course, you should add a few pounds because the matured adult body is different from the body at puberty. Take in consideration your level of activity as a child, your eating habits, etc. These are factors for why the matured adult body will not appear exactly as your body at puberty. For instance, at puberty, if you weighed 120 pounds, your matured adult body after weight loss may not return to 120 pounds, but rather may return to an adult body of 135 or 140 pounds. This is reasonable since you are not eating these days as you did as a child and you may not be as active as you were as a child… like playing on the playground everyday, walking or riding your bike everywhere, etc.

Some patients are actually able to go past their set point because as a matured adult, they are more active and eat healthier than they did as a child. The task of truly evaluating your young life’s habits and routines will be the first step in understanding the number you want to expect on the scale once you are done losing your weight. Be realistic in this evaluation. There’s no sense or happiness is setting a goal weight that your body just refuses to accept.

Take upon a personal assignment this week to fully consider what your goal weight “should” be, then add a few pounds to that number for reality-check.

Go through this list below and write down your answers. This will help you in your evaluation. All of these questions refer to YOU as a pre-teen near puberty:

•Did you eat healthy snacks or eat a lot of junk food?
•Did you participate in sports, bike ride, swim, dance, or do other high-energy activities?
•Did you sleep-in a lot on school days off or in the summertime?
•Were you happy with life in general?
•Did you worry about weighing yourself often?
•Were you instructed to always finish your plate at mealtimes?

Now look at your answers you wrote down.

Are you surprised at your answers? Have you ever thought of these things being a part of who you are today?

Keep your answers and review them often and do this….
REPEAT the things in your life that brought you success in the past, and DON’T DO the things on your list that you know could make you GAIN weight after you’ve lost your weight.

So, now that you have the image of your young life in your mind, reflect upon your habits and routines you had then, and incorporate the GOOD THINGS back into your life today. Skip the BAD THINGS you used to do because they certainly won’t work for you as an adult.

In short, BE REALISTIC in determining what your goal weight should be in the end. Be kind to yourself and remember that if you end up being 20 pounds shy of your goal weight, YOU SHOULD REJOICE that you were able to achieve so much in the first place! It may take a long time to lose that final 20 pounds, so don’t despair. Just stay focused and keep doing what works best for you.

Melt Your Obesity With Diet Pills

Posted by admin - June 5th, 2008

When you indulge yourself with negligent eating habits, mismanaged lifestyle then with time you will attain a condition called obesity, which has become a global health problem and is increasing alarmingly in the last decade.

At modern times, people are more conscious about health issues and share lots of information and views concerning good health through mass media. But, it is very sad to know that, only few people get proper health counseling and guidance and benefit from them.

There are various measures you can adopt to get rid of obesity. Taking diet pill is one of them. Diet pills can be taken as the easiest way of losing weight when other conventional weight loss diet does not show the desired result.

Among the diet pills, Phentermine is the most commonly prescribed drug as it is cheaper in comparison to the other weight loss drugs and is used for the short-term weight management. Phentermine is an appetite suppressant and is available with brand names like Adipex-P, Fastin, Ionamin, Obenix, Obephen, Oby-Cap, Oby-Trim, Panshape M, Phentercot, Phentride, Pro-Fast HS, Pro-Fast SA, Pro-Fast SR, Teramine, Zantryl etc. It is chemically similar to an amphetamine which stimulates the central nervous system and increases your heart rate and blood pressure and thereby decreases your appetite.
But, anyone who opts for this drug should consult properly with a doctor before purchasing it, because it has been found that after a certain period of its use the body will develop tolerance to the appetite suppressant and the drug becomes ineffective and here its use should be discontinued. Phentermine is likely to develop primary pulmonary hypertension, a rare, fatal disease of the lungs, as well as valvular heart disease, skin abnormalities, insomnia, irritability, hyperactivity, personality changes, and psychosis.

You can easily avail cheap Phentermine through the Internet, because more and more pharmaceutical companies are promoting their drugs online. When you order cheap Phentermine online you are entitled to get free online health consultation which may help you save the time that you spend visiting a doctor. The best part of ordering Phentermine online is that it is comparatively cheaper than buying it over-the-counter. Online pharmacies are always ready to serve you in the best way possible.

Finally, it must be mentioned here that the effect of Phentermine or other weight loss drugs are for shorter duration. So you should complement Phentermine with regular exercise and balanced food.

Understanding Mesothelioma Treatment

Posted by admin - May 24th, 2008

Mesothelioma treatment relates relieving or curing the deadly disease called mesothelioma. Mesothelioma is serious disease that affects the lining of lungs, abdominal organs or heart. Mesothelioma can be of two types, either benign or malignant. Mesothelioma treatment, for an individual suffering from benign mesothelioma, is surgery. However, in case of malignant mesothelioma scientists could not find any established mesothelioma treatment to cure the patient fully.

Types of Mesothelioma Treatment
Mesothelioma treatment options available today are radiation, chemotherapy, radical surgery and/or combination of all these treatments. During surgery, either a part of tumor or the whole tumor is removed. In some cases, a portion of the normal tissue surrounding the area is also removed along with the tumor.

Mesothelioma treatment, in which the doctors try to cure the patient with drugs, is known as chemotherapy. As the mesothelioma cancer is a rare disease, very little information is available regarding the effects of different drugs on different patients. Adriamycm, (doxorubicin), Cytoxan, (cyclophosphamide), 5-fluorouracil and 5-azacytidine are some of the drugs that have shown good results and a response rate of 0 to 35 % when tried on mesothelioma patients. Some other effective drugs for mesothelioma treatment are cisplatin, high dose methotrexate, interferon, anthracycline analogues and vinblastine. The National Cancer Institute is sponsoring further studies the effectiveness of these and other drugs by funding many clinical centers.

Radiation is another option of mesothelioma treatment that is more helpful in reducing the pain rather than curing the disease itself. Because of the severity of the disease, standard dose of 6,000 rads of radiation has very little effect on mesothelioma patients. In limited cases, some benefit is observed when patient is treated with aggressive high dose radiation. Use of radioactive compounds on diseased tissue has also shown some positive results with the individuals diagnosed early on. Patients of pleural mesothelioma survived for over 24 months when radioactive colloidal gold (Au 198) was placed between the two pleural membranes. Scientists are hopeful that radioactive chromic phosphate, p32 can be used as an effective mesothelioma treatment. This might increase the survival period of patients suffering from peritoneal mesothelioma.

Like the treatment of other cancers, mesothelioma treatment also has its side effects. Nausea and vomiting are some minor problems associated with radiation therapy and chemotherapy that could be controlled with medicines. However, suppression of bone marrow is a serious short-term side effect that may cause WBC, RBC and platelets counts to go down. Such patients may become susceptible to bleeding and infection and may require antibiotic therapy or any other supportive care.

Mesothelioma treatment can be a very expensive and lengthy procedure. However, the patients suffering from mesothelioma cancers can seek compensation for mesothelioma treatments. They can file lawsuits against the individuals or organizations responsible for causing asbestos exposure.

Painless Weight Loss - 10 Tips

Posted by admin - May 19th, 2008

Is dieting draining your energy? Worn out by menu planning, food preparation, and shopping? Here are 10 painless ways to boost your weight loss efforts without depriving yourself:

1. Drink green tea. Studies show you’ll burn fat faster and speed your metabolism. Purchase a good brand at a health food store or on-line. Start with drinking one cup a day.

2. Cheat once in a while, once every one or two weeks. Eat what you’ve been missing the most.

3. Eat half a grapefruit as a mid-morning snack. It has less than 50 calories, is naturally sweet, and you’ll feel satisfied until lunch time. Include a variety of fruits–apple slices, orange segments, seedless grapes–so you have something different to look forward to each day.

4. Decrease your milk fat content one level. Drinking 2% now? Go down to 1%. Try mixing the two at first if you really notice the difference. Or start by just using the lower fat milk in cooking, then replace it for drinking.

5. Write down everything you eat. Get a small spiral notebook and keep it in your purse or pocket. If you have to see it in print, you might not munch down on that brownie.

6. Season your food with a little more spice, including pepper, red pepper, hot sauce, salsa, Cajun, or Asian flavorings. You’ll temporarily burn more calories and get more flavor with no fat.

7. Drink one cup of water before each meal. Your stomach will feel fuller before you even start eating.

8. Eat your meals on a salad plate. Your plate will look fuller and you will have less space to pile on food.

9. Eat next to a mirror. The site of yourself eating is not pretty. Consider mounting a mirror on your refrigerator door.

10. Wash the dishes, clean your kitchen, and brush your teeth after your evening meal. Once you’ve done all that work, you won’t want to go through it all again.

These steps are effortless activities, but over time can add up to significant weight loss. Try them and see!

Mesothelioma: Treatments for Mesothelioma Cancer

Posted by admin - May 8th, 2008

Mesothelioma cancer is currently treated through three treatments, depending on the cancer location, the disease stage, and the patient’s general health and age. These treatments are surgery, chemotherapy and radiation therapy, which sometimes are combined to fight the disease in so far as possible.

In a surgery, one of the most common treatments for mesothelioma, the doctor removes part of the lining of the abdomen or the chest and some tissue around it. In a pneumonectomy, the doctor may also remove one lung when the patient has pleural mesothelioma or cancer of the pleura. In other surgical procedure, the doctor may also remove part of the diaphragm, the muscle below the lungs that helps with breathing.
Through these procedures, the medical specialist shall try to excise tumourous tissue arising from this cancer disease. As these operations will reduce the patient’s respiratory capacity, the surgeon will evaluate the patient’s ability to function after a lung tissue removal, before performing a pneumonectomy.

Another method to fight Mesothelioma is chemotherapy or the use of anticancer drugs to kill cancer cells throughout the body. These drugs are given to the patient by an intravenous procedure, an injection into a vein. Currently, experts are studying the effectiveness of intracavitary chemotherapy or the possibility of giving chemotherapy straight to the chest or abdomen.

Radiotherapy or radiation therapy is the use of high-energy rays to destroy malignant cells and shrink tumors. It is important to know that this medical procedure attacks the cancer cells only in the treated area. There are two ways of giving this therapy. One, external radiation, in which the radiation comes from a machine, and other, internal radiation, where the cancer cells are found after putting materials that produce radiation into the affected area.

Doctor’s way to relieve patient’s pain is to use a needle or a thin tube to drain fluid that has built up in the abdominal or chest cavities through a procedure called thoracentesis, when it is from the chest, and paracentesis, when the removal is from the abdomen. The specialists may also give the drugs through a tube in the chest to prevent the accumulation of more liquid.

Food addiciton!

Posted by admin - April 30th, 2008

“Hi, I have had a weight problem all my life. But I think it is
more

of a pleasure problem It is also a self esteem of issue. Food
was

always a reward or “to keep me happy” kind of thing. Food is a
happy

gathering kind of thing… holidays.. going out to eat..sweet
cakes on

my birthday. Even as a baby I am sure that I was given food when
I

wasn’t given personal attention. Diet’s are a form of
restrictions. When a person is on a “diet” it is

like a statement to everyone around them that they are trying to
lose

weight. They are telling the people around them they can only
eat a

certain foods… That food is the food that is on the diet. It
is a

form of restriction on a loved one. They now have to show their
love

by helping me stay on a diet. With a “diet” it seems easier for
a

person to watch me sweat and work out harder to obtain that new
weight

that I have set for myself. I seem to think that being one of
the reasons for me being fat. As a

baby, a child is given a bottle to drink to make them happy and
stop

crying. Even I give myself pleasure with food. I have learned to
have

pleasure from food. Now diet, is a plan of food a person eats
for life to keep a certain

weight. OK.. the rules change, and now my self esteem is up and
I am

worth surviving. Yes, it is a survival issue. Eating too much
can kill

me. Of course the story of being fat isn’t that easily answered
or talked

about. There are many other factors on the way I think about
this

issue. There is much more to it. Much, much more. And this
wonderful web site and you wonderful gals are helping me.

Women need more self esteem on many issues. Women can and
deserve to

be happy.”

- Peggy (WSE member)

Thank You Peggy for allowing me to share your post in my blog.

For people with an emotional addiction for food, losing their
extra

weight is a lot harder than eating less food and getting on the

treadmill. Many people are over weight because they are
suffering with

an inner issue. They will use food as an emotional void filler.
The

only reason they are hungry is because they are sad. They have

confused hunger with sadness. They use food as their drug to
feel

calmness. They will eat and space out as an addict does after a
fix.

They will also fall into the roller coaster of self-loathing.
Loathing

the fact that they once again fell into the unnecessary need for
food.

People that are obese and actually have lost weight, are of two
minds.

They feel like they are someone else when they are thinner and
live a

life where they fear that they could fall into that food
addiction at

any second. The other mind is the one that is consumed with self-

disgust and a weakness for the addiction of food. People with
eating

addictions love and hate food. Again being of two minds. They
try to

justify themselves, by criticizing people without food
addictions.

They will drive by fast food restaurants and debate within
themselves,

only to increase the need for food. Which only causes them to
devour

even more than usual. They are in a constant battle with, should
I or

shouldn’t I. I know I shouldn’t but I so want to. It’s a viscous

circle for them.

One of the hardest things for obese people to deal with is the

whispers and snickers from other people as they pass by them.
They

know well enough that they disgust people just by watching their

reactions, yet is is not enough to make them stop eating. Obese
people

are ridiculed in public all the time and they loose out on many

relationships because the other person cannot understand their

addiction for food. Food addicts will even ignore that they are

literally killing themselves with every bite that they do not
need.

They choose to not think about it, as any addict does.

Some will say that solving food addiction is as easy as just
telling

people to stop being lazy, to exercise and to stop over eating.
For

them, food means so many things besides fueling their bodies
with

nutrients. Their addiction will totally over rule their nature
to

protect themselves, health wise or society`s concerns about

appearance.

Depression, low self-esteem, history of abuse, poverty, family
obesity

and emotionally troubled childhood upbringings are a few of the

greatest causes that trigger off food addiction. As I said
earlier in

this article, people are desperate to fill an emptiness. Food is
the

easiest route to reaching that full feeling they desire.
Emotional

emptiness is the monster that creates the addiction in obese
people.

You would think that with all the methods that have proven to
help

people with their weight issues, there would not be a single

overweight person, but the numbers are growing faster every day.

Obesity is one of the only health issues the we know how to
battle and

prevent, yet we fail to do so.

Why is that?

Is it because FAT is one of those HUSH words?

Do we ignore the overweight issues of others, so not to hurt
their

feelings?

Are we doing them any favours by pretending it is OK to be

dangerously overweight?

Do we feel that if they like themselves like that, who are we
to

judge them?

Do we think to ourselves, better them than me?

People that are addicted to the food drug are just as imprisoned
as

any other addict. There is only one way to get off the drug, and
that

is to seek help. Also they must want to get off this drug, for

themselves. They must want to feel good about themselves. To be
able

to get to that point, they must build their self-esteem and
address

the skeletons in their closets. This is why I created

womensselfesteem.com. This is one road to an addiction-free
place in

your mind.

As you read in Peggy`s post, she has finally begun her climb up
the

mountain to a better feeling person. She wanted to share this
with

other women that are behind those bars of food addiction. It is

beatable. You just have to want to begin the battle.

Again HUGGZZZZ Peggy.

Medical Billing and Buying Related Software

Posted by admin - April 21st, 2008

Beware of the ads out there claiming that you can “make it big” working from your house as an inexperienced medical billing specialist and make lot of money! You surely thought why you’ll have to train years in an institute and spend so much money when this work seems so easy? Why those ads tells me that is no need to earn any degree to succeed in this field? Don’t trusth them, you do need experience and you should obtain a Medical Billing Degree or a certificate at least if you intend to become successful in this complicated field.

These so-called “business opportunities” are to be weary of since medical billing is a skilled profession that requires skills that must be obtained through an educational setting and much experience on the field. Only with years of experience and study in an accredited medical college or university you will learn such skills like:

  • Completing complex insurance claim forms
  • Handling Insurance guidelines, procedures and claims submission process with ease
  • Dealing with Explanations of Benefits
  • Contacting both Patient and Insurance Company
  • Generate accounts receivable reports

Medical Billing and Coding Educational Options

In practice, medical coding is the first step in the billing process, thus in the majority of schools you will find that the same training program teaches both skills.

Gene Therapy for Mesothelioma

Posted by admin - April 20th, 2008

An exciting new treatment that has given hope to mesothelioma victims is called gene therapy. Gene therapy attempts to decipher why proteins within certain cells cause them to be resilient to cancer while some cells do not. A while back it was believed that genes were complete upon birth, and that they couldn’t affect conditions afflicted during life. This however, turned out to not be the case. Since then we have learned that smoking, sunlight and certain foods can all affect our DNA and make changes to our genetic code. These new insights provided by these conditions have allowed doctors to view many conditions like malignant mesothelioma in a new light.

There are many factors that contribute to Mesothelioma. Asbestos exposure is the primary contributing factor, but genetic mutations in individuals also worsen it. Gene therapy is a revolution in mesothelioma treatment because it replaces cancer-causing genes with genes that are medically constructed to die when exposed to cancerous growth. These ’suicide genes’ are a possible way to slow and possibly stop the rapid replication of cancerous cells. Studies are also starting to begin experimenting with replacing cancer generating genes with genes susceptible to certain drugs. This would allow the cancer to be potentially eliminated with few side effects.

Gene therapy treatment is still in its beginning stages and is not yet 100% safe. However, this desperate situation suffered by mesothelioma victims, sometimes calls for various experimental treatments. Any hope for surviving mesothelioma outweighs many of the dangers involved.

Are Your Thoughts About Your Body Holding You Back From Success?

Posted by admin - April 5th, 2008

When someone joins my personal coaching program, one of the first things I ask them to do is to describe exactly what their body is going to look like once I help them reach their goal weight. I ask them to do this in writing - not over the phone, and here’s why…

Deeply imbedded negative thoughts are what cause us to have difficulties in any weight loss or health enhancement program - in fact, our past failures can almost always be traced back to negative thoughts that we didn’t even realize we had.

Most of our negative thinking comes out when we write things down on paper (or on the computer).

I challenge you to write out 10 brief descriptions about how your body will look in 30 days if you were coached by someone like me - someone who knows exactly how to transform the human body no matter what stage of the game you’re currently at.

Go ahead, take a moment and write out what your face would look like, what your arms would look like, what your legs and your butt would look like - would your skin look different, would your muscles be tighter, would you be leaner - detail everything, then come right back.

Did you do it?

Make your list now before reading any further - I want you to walk away with some profound knowledge of yourself when you’re done reading this article.
OK, now that you have your list, let me show you something that you can use to judge whether or not you’ve been causing yourself to fail in your attempts to lose weight and keep it off.

Here are some examples of statements that a good friend of mine used to have before he and I began working together - statements that were literally holding him back from success:

Face-more chiseled features, no double chin, no doughy jowls or puffy cheeks, no bags under the eyes.

Other than improved facial shape, I really have no complaints at all about my face, hair, eyes, nose, ears.

Neck-no double chin or “wattle”

Chest-no gynecomastia (womanly breasts), muscular instead. Look, ma, I can see my ribcage and pectoral muscles instead of a soft mattress of flab.

Arms-hard sinewy curves instead of soft breadsticks. Seeing veins and muscles instead of smooth fat.

Abdomen-are there really abs hiding in there? They’ve never made an appearance in 50 years! It’d be nice to have a tight waist not uncomfortably sliced by too-tight underwear.

Legs-less of a conical shape, more elongated and solid. Although my calves have always been rather large and firm-my best body part, next to my brain.

Buttocks-less sag, more form
Back-could be a lot less hairy, would be nice to see a “V” shape instead of a truncated pyramid.

Can you see why he might have had a few troubles in the past reaching his goal?

But I’ll let you in on a little secret - this guy is in great shape now and enjoying life more than ever, and he’s a pleasure to speak with each week in our coaching calls.

Now here’s a list from a woman who recently completed one of my coaching programs - this list was written out after our first session together - watch how positive every statement is:

WHAT MY BODY IS GOING TO LOOK LIKE
-
my face will be thinner, more defined
my posture will be great all of the time
my legs will be free of cellulite and extra fat
my butt will be sculpted and defined
my abs will be tight and defined
my arms will be cut and defined and strong and sexy!
my chest will be lifted and shapely
my back will show definition and be sexy!
I will feel the urge to walk around naked all the time! (around my house and my husband, of course)
I will walk confidently knowing that I look great!
I will compliment my awesome body with cool clothes that show it off
I will wear a bikini from now on!!! No shorts over the bottom!
I will wear those short shorts I have sitting in my closet
my skin will be clear
I will be unbelievably beautiful and sexy!!!

When making your list, make sure to avoid using any negatives, and have fun with this exercise - the short time you take out of your day to make your list will save you tons of time and frustration in the near future.
