Viral Marketing 101: Let Your Customers Promote Your Online Business!

Posted by admin - August 27th, 2008

A good virus

Everything that we’ve been taught online and off says that we should prevent rather than spread viruses…right? Well, when it comes to creating a buzz about your online business, spreading a virusor more accuratelyleveraging the power of viral marketing, could be just what the doctor ordered. Like a sneeze transmits the common cold, viral marketing entices Web sites or users to pass along a marketing message, escalating the growth of the message’s visibility and influence. This type of “stealth” marketing can be very cost effective in reaching a large number of people about your website, product, or service

Already an epidemic

Chances are you’ve already been exposed to one or more viral marketing methods. Countless organizations have already put a wide variety of innovative strategies to work. The ground-breaking example of a viral marketing success story is Hotmail, the Microsoft-owned company that promotes its popular email service by appending an advertising teaser to the end of its user’s email messages. Amazon.com, another great purveyor of viral marketing, uses many tactics. For example, the site’s order confirmation page let’s you input the email addresses of your friends/family and invite them to save 10 percent on an item you just bought. If they go to the site and buy the item, not only do they get a discount, but you get an Amazon store credit for the dollar value of their 10% discount!

Common tactics

Thankfully, you don’t need a Microsoft- or Amazon- sized bankroll to deploy viral marketing tactics in your e-commerce site. Many leading e-commerce vendors have begun bundling some of the more popular features into their online store offerings. (GoECart has offered these features for some time.)

Email-a-friend (e.g., "Recommend it" links)
 Electronic gift certificates
 Gift wrap (i.e., encourages customers to present gifts to friends)
 Customer reviews (e.g., ability to provide recommendations right on the order page)

Asking customers to enter the details like birth date or important events upon checkout can also aid in personalizing viral marketing messages and building customer relationships.

Credibility is key

Viral marketing is becoming increasingly popular because of its low-cost (especially when compared with traditional advertising methods), high response rate from targeted users, and ease of execution. The obvious advantage is its ability to obtain a large number of interested people at an affordable cost. Its main weakness is that some tactics and/or overuse can come across as “spam,” risking damage to your brand. To avoid appearing as spam, companies should limit the number of techniques they use and choose the ones they do employ wisely.

Here to stay

With its proliferation on many popular e-commerce sites, online shoppers will use (and even come to expect) relevant viral marketing features. Online storefronts should be ready with the features that are most appropriate to their business.

Battery-Powered-Tools, How to Get the Most From Them

Posted by admin - August 26th, 2008

I remember a few years ago one of the sales people at my local hardware store told me they were expecting the arrival of new battery powered circular saw, I think it was a Makita. On hearing the phrase “battery powered circular saw”, I laughed out loud and told him to call me when the battery powered table saws arrive. Within a couple of years I had purchased one of those battery powered circular saws that I so willingly scoffed at just a couple of years earlier. I soon discovered that having portable tools had huge benefits. That’s why companies like Porter-Cable, Makita, Delta and others have focused on these areas.

These days battery powered tools are available is drills, drivers, impact drivers, routers, jig saws, portable planers, circular saws, reciprocating saws and chop saws, and even Ryobi has battery powered chain saw that works well for big jobs that other tools can’t handle. So to see how to get the most from these tools.

Lets stop for a moment and look at batteries that power these units. Most power packs that drive these tools are a series of small rechargeable batteries all wired together to give the optimum power. These rechargeable batteries are very similar to the flashlight batteries that you buy for your TV clicker and garage door opener and various other home products.

The difference between rechargeable batteries like Duracel and Eveready, are that the rechargeables have higher quality shells and consist of slightly different components to make them safe to recharge. The rechargeable batteries that are wired together are normally nickle cadmium (nicad) 1.2 volt batteries. When they are wired together in series … 8 together equals 9.6 volt, 10 together equals 12.2 volt, 12 together equals 14.4 and so on. That is how more power is generated, more little batteries, more power, and of course, more weight.

The more batteries that are wired together, the greater the torque (or twisting power) of the tool. Torque is created by a combination of horse power and speed, and high speed does not necessarily mean high power. Conversely high power does not necessarily come with high speed..

You will find another type of battery on the market called a “nickle-metal-hydride” (Ni-MH). These batteries use compounds that give the batteries a slightly longer life (they also cost a bit more to purchase). Some contractors prefer tools that will give them longer battery life which is the reason for this more advanced rechargeable battery version.

As woodworkers, we all know one thing, HEAT is our greatest enemy. When saw blades get too hot they lose their tensility and become dull, screws that are driven into hardwoods can snap because of the high heat created by friction, and heat can burn out the electric motors of our machinery if we are not careful. Heat is also the enemy of batteries. All batteries heat up when they are being recharged. The larger battery packs such as 18 volts and larger tend to heat up even more because there are so many batteries in the packs and they don’t have heat dispersion characteristics as smaller packs because there are so many batteries next to one another. Batteries tend not to take a charge when they are hot, so keeping the ambient temperature normal to cool is a benefit.

On the flip side, batteries do not do well in cold either. Once the temperature drops below 14 degrees Fahrenheit ( minus 10 Celsius) batteries do not perform well (if at all). Most batteries will lose their power when the temperature gets this low.

The recharging of batteries is a bit of a mystery to a many people. The tendency is to keep batteries fully charged all the time. In truth, batteries need to be exercised in order to keep them in top shape. This means they should be fully discharged every few months, then fully re-charged. “Topping” up battery charges will make the batteries lose their effectiveness, and after a time they will only take a partial charge because that is what they have become accustomed to. This means they will lose their ability to use the full charge. If your older cordless device is doing this, sometimes you can rejuvenate the battery by charging and FULLY discharging it several time.

My old 9.6 Craftsman portable drill, which is now 10 years old has been one of the best tools I have ever owned. I have no idea how many screws it has driven, holes it has bored or blades it has ground, but it’s batteries have almost given up now. I checked on the price of new batteries and it will be more cost effective for me to upgrade to a whole new unit … but I have no intention of getting a big hulking unit, with tons of power, I don’t need it and I refuse to pack around all that battery weight, so I am currently investigating some 12 volt units and looking forward to another 10 years of service from my new drill, and when I need more power, I always have my trusty plug-in drill, and the hassle of extension cords that goes with it.

How to write emails that get results!

Posted by admin - August 21st, 2008

Writing an effective email that gets the result you were looking
for is not as simple as just opening up your email software and
hitting the keyboard with your fingers.

Writing an email that gets results is an art form - get it right
and it is read effortlessly by the reader. Get it wrong and it
reflects really badly on you.

So if I have just ONE tip to pass on to you it would be this:

When writing your emails throw everything you learnt in
English classes out the window!

Instead, use the following tips to make sure that your
communication is as powerful and effective as it can be:

1. Personalise: People love to see their name. So personalise
your email to them. Even if you are sending out a bulk email to
many different people, there are software tools that allow you
to personalise each and every email so that it looks as though
it has come direct from you and direct to them — one-to-one.

2. Write just like you talk: Use plain, easy to understand
English. Nobody cares if you can use xenophobia and ostentatious
in the same sentence. Write almost like you are talking to your
best mate over a beer. So that means use contractions. Be
friendly and personable in your writing.

3. Put passion in your email: Since you don’t have the luxury of
seeing your prospect eye-to-eye to gauge their reactions you
need to put extra passion into your message. Even if you think
you are overdoing it when you write, your email will seem
understated when it gets read. Get enthusiastic!

4. Write to one person: Especially important when you are
writing an email that will be sent to more than one person, try
to think of the ideal prospect/client as you are writing and
make the message just for them. Even if the message will be read
by thousands of people, every person will read it one at a time.
Use “you” and “your” liberally. Focus on them, not yourself.

5. Keep your sentences and paragraphs short: Keep your sentences
and paragraphs short and simple.

Period.

Sentences (even paragraphs) can even be one word like that last
one. And paragraphs should be no more than 4 or 5 lines. You
want your email to look easy to read with lots of white space.
Make it inviting. Long blocks of words are scary. Paragraph
breaks do NOT need to be determined by content.

6. Use plenty of compelling subheads: Subheads should be like
mini-headlines. Use them to break up large bodies of text and to
bring people back into the body of the email.

A lot of people will scan your email so you need to make your
subheads give a complete selling message by themselves. Also, be
sure to use different graphic embellishments.

7. Eliminate excess wording: Simplify. Convey your message in a
clear and concise manner — but remember that doesn’t mean ‘keep
it short’.

My personal guru of direct marketing, Ted Nicholas, repeatedly
states that copy can never be too long, just too boring . All
things considered equal, longer copy will always outperform
shorter copy, AS LONG AS the copy is compelling and not boring.
And you need to ruthlessly edit your email for flow.

8. Use action verbs whenever possible: If you see too many “as”,
“is”, “was” or “were” replace them. Sentences using action verbs
are more powerful.

When writing your email you want it clear enough so that any
high school student can understand it. Now, you probably think
that your prospects/clients are a lot smarter than the average
high school student. But nobody has time anymore to sit down and
figure out what you’re trying to say — so keep your writing
simple and straightforward.

Oh, and go through your text and cut out the word “that”
wherever you possibly can. It’s a ‘dead’ word that reduces the
impact of any sentence.

Or you might like to read the above sentence as: It’s a dead
word and reduces the impact of any sentence.

Which one do you think is more powerful?

Important particulars
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
There are a few important points you need to be aware of.
1. Always give people the option of being removed from your
mailing list. Very important now that Privacy Laws are coming in
all around the world and spam levels are so high.
2. Make your links ‘clickable’. In order to make it easy for
people to go straight from your email to your website you need
to make your links ‘clickable’. Here’s how a link should be
written in your email: http://www.yoursite.com.au
Most email programs will recognise this as a link.
And if you want to make an email link you should write it as
mailto:emailaddress@yoursite.com.au
Well, that’s it. Happy writing!
Is Estate Planning for Everyone?
Posted by admin - August 20th, 2008
Many people think they don’t need an estate plan.
They relate the term to tax planning and feel that
their estate is not big enough to bother. They
therefore think estate planning has nothing to do
with them.
But estate planning is more than a method to avoid
or reduce estate taxes. Many young families might
be surprised to learn they should think about estate
planning now.
Right now there is an effort to abolish or confine
estate taxes to only the very wealthy. Of course,
Congress changes the tax laws constantly, so there
can be no guarantee that this trend will continue.
Be even a normal working class couple with a home,
two cars, money in retirement or 401K plans and
maybe the start of a college for their children can
have a surprisingly large estate. So even if estate
taxes don’t apply today, they may in the future.
Estate planning can be used to distribute your
taxable estate in such a way that taxes are
minimized. There are all sorts of ways to do this
and, if you are wealthy enough, your financial
planners and attorneys should be working together
to do this for you.
For the rest of us, estate planning is less involved
with taxes and more with who inherits your estate;
who cares for your minor children; how you feel
about life support measures; or who will control
your affairs if you are unable to.
Your estate is all you possessions - savings, home,
car, investments etc. If you have a will, your
estate will be distributed according to your wishes.
If you don’t, they will be distributed under state
intestate laws.
You would have to check the laws in your state, but
there could be cases that if you die without a will,
your parents would inherit your property, not your
wife or your money could go to distant cousins and
not to your lifelong companion.
So the first reason for a will is to have your property
distributed according to your wishes. If you want to
leave your money to the Salvation Army and not your son,
this is the way to do it.
Many parents use estate planning to try to rein in their
out-of-control children. They may provide for a bequest
that starts at an age when the child has hopefully matured,
say 35. Or they may make provisions that if their daughter
is divorced, no money would pass to the ex-husband.
More commonly, grandparents use estate planning tools to
provide for all or part of their grandchildren’s’ college
education or choose to bypass their family and leave their
money to their favorite charity.
Or a business owner could pass his business to his partners
or employees in order to keep the business running.
A common use of estate planning is to name subsequent
beneficiaries. For example, your spouse would inherit your
art collection on your death and on her death it would go
to a museum.
Another reason for estate planning through a will is to
appoint guardians for minor children or disabled relatives
you are now caring for. If you are leaving a bequest in
your will or the proceeds of an insurance policy (which is
generally not part of your estate) to a minor or person
unable to look after his own affairs, you also need to
appoint someone to manage, conserve, invest and dole out
this money for the care of the minor or incapacitated person.
If you are ill or facing the prospect of losing your ability
to control your own affairs, you can use estate planning
techniques like a durable power of attorney, property
transfers or adding a trusted friend or relative as joint
owner of your property and bank accounts.
You can also provide for a living will, directing how far
you want life support measures to go if you are terminally
ill.
So estate planning is more than leaving your grandmother’s
watch to your daughter.
The proceeds of most life insurance policies and jointly held
property with rights of survivorship are not generally part of
the probate estate. Many people believe that they can use
these devices instead of a will.
However, only the specific property held jointly is transferred
to the surviving owner. For example your house would be transferred,
but not any of your separately held investments.
Also problems arise if there is concurrent death, e.g an auto
accident that kills the husband and wife.
There can also be adverse tax consequences to passing your property this way.
They are so many different situations and methods of estate planning, it is best left in the hands of a professional, in this case an estate lawyer working alone or in conjunction with your financial planner.
Simple wills are not expensive and can be drawn with the help of advice books or computer software programs.
But if you have to go beyond simple, hire the right professionals.
Estate planning is a complex field. If you have more than a house,
car and banking account that you want your wife to get on your
death, you should consult a qualified estate planning attorney.
7 Reasons Why Training Doesn’t Produce the Desired Results and What You Can Do To
Posted by admin - August 19th, 2008
Seven Reasons Why Training Doesn’t Produce the Desired Results and What You Can Do To Improve Your Results
Overview
Abraham Maslow said, “If the only tool you have is a hammer, every problem looks like a nail.” As managers, leaders and change agents, we want to improve our organizational performance. Often training is seen as an important tool in this pursuit. Training is a fabulous tool! It can provide awareness, knowledge, skills and maybe even a chance to practice. However, all of our change efforts aren’t nails, so training isn’t our only tool. This special report identifies seven common reasons why training doesn’t meet it’s goals - even when it is the right tool - and more importantly - gives you some action steps to avoid these pitfalls.
The “Who’s Accountable?” Game
People rarely are held accountable for using what they learned in a course or workshop when they get back to the workplace. So some people recognize going to training as a game. That’s why training is seldom seen (by anyone in the organization) as what it could and should be - a strategic part of the business, with responsibility for performance enhancement. Regardless of how training is viewed, if people aren’t held accountable, how likely is it that real performance change will occur? All of the actions below will make accountability clear.
What You Can Do
•Give people a clear message before participating in training what the expectations of them will be when they return.
•Plan some time with the participant both before and after the training session.
•Let participants know before they attend that an action plan is expected as a result of the training session. (Then be interested in the outcome.)
•Ask participants how you can help them reach their new performance goals.
The Cafeteria Cause - “Course du Jour”
Often training has no connection to the strategic objectives of the organization. Whether true or not, the prevalent perception in the organization is that there is no rhyme or reason to the latest training course. This cause is called “Course du Jour” because often organizations offer new training just like some people try new diets. New business books (and accompanying “hot” new training topics) are published with the frequency of new diet plans - and the similarities continue! With the fad popular diets, people hear about the new approach, buy the book, get excited, try the diet, and soon leave it - usually before they received any real benefit. The same thing happens in an organization. The new training topic, approach, idea or craze is tried and dropped before results can occur.. There’s usually nothing wrong with the training introduced, but usually it isn’t supported in the organization - or given the time to work. In these instances, the company is wasting time and money and confusing the majority of the employees. Maybe most costly however is the risk of fostering cynicism and reducing the credibility of leadership.
What You Can Do
•Make training decisions based on strategic direction and real performance gaps. Once those training priorities have been set, stick to them.
•Make a commitment to get a return on that training investment.
•Resolve to give the training time and support to work.
•Determine clear performance outcomes for the effort up front.
•When a new “hot topic” training course is proposed, ask, “How does this fit with what we’ve been doing? Is this just our next diet?”
•Use real work in the training when possible.
The Piling on the Work Paradigm
Many times managers and leaders see training as an expensive waste of time. When they attend classes, they continually think about all the work that is piling up “back in the office”. Their employees see this attitude through their leader’s actions. This thinking grows because leaders don’t explain the reasons for the course and don’t help people deal with the workload while they are gone. Since you can’t make people learn, these situations can be disastrous in the training session itself. People may resent having to be in the training because they don’t understand why they’re there, and they know they’ll have to work harder when they get back to the job to catch up. In this situation the participants may leave more cynical than when they arrived, with few if any new skills to counteract that possible effect.
What You Can Do
•Do everything possible to make sure all of management is on-board with the training and its purpose.
•Make a commitment to get a return on that training investment.
•Resolve to give the training time and support to work.
•Determine clear performance outcomes for the effort up front.
•Set up a plan to handle the work while the participant is learning. This action speaks volumes about the importance of the training. It will also improve their ability to focus on the session (e.g. “My critical work is being handled”, and “Whew, I’m sure glad that most of my mail will have been handled when I get back!”)
The January Third Application Assignment
Well designed training with motivated learners will result in people leaving training with some clear ideas about how they plan to apply what they’ve learned back on the job. But well intentioned as those plans might be, they may be no more effective than most New Year’s Resolutions. Old habits are hard to break! Habits are especially hard to break when there is no support for the new skills and behaviors back in the workplace.
What You Can Do
•Give people a clear message before participating in training what the expectations of them will be when they return.
•Plan some time with the participant both before and after the training session.
•Let them know before they attend, that an action plan is expected as a result of the training session. (Then be interested in the outcome.)
•Ask them how you can help them reach their new performance goals. All of these actions will make accountability clear.
•Give an entire work group training in new information and skills at the same time. (Whenever possible and appropriate.)
•Use real work in the training when possible.
The Sleepwear Syndrome - “One-Size-Fits-All”
Often times a T-shirt or sleepwear is designed to be “one size-fits-all” and serves its purpose. Training isn’t sleepwear and probably won’t be effective that way. Look at it this way: though all the teen-age kids might wear one size of sweatshirt to school, would people wear the same size suit or skirt to work? If they did, would they look as good or perform well? In other words, one-size-fits-all garments aren’t all that versatile for different situations. The basic goal of clothing - to cover our body and provide warmth - would be achieved, but many other reasons why we wear clothing would not be satisfied. The same is true for training in the workplace. Too often, generic, across-the-board training is administered. The basic premise with this syndrome is that “We’ll give it to everyone - to be fair - maybe everyone doesn’t need this information or lack the skills, but at least we will make sure we don’t leave anyone out.” In reality often management doesn’t really know who needs the new skills and knowledge.
What You Can Do
•Base training and participation decisions on skills needed to be effective in the workplace.
The Lone Ranger Situation
Often people are sent to training as a perk, a reward, or as a way to get them in a new surrounding for awhile. In most cases, people in a team or work group may never all see the same training, except for the “Course du Jour” or “One-Size-Fits-All” variety. Some times people need specific skills to perform a specific part of their work. Often though, the “perk” training workshops are for skills many people in the group could use (or maybe they’ll all be sent over-time; after all, everyone can’t be gone at once.) The result? People come back to work in a vacuum. Not only are they not accountable (Reason Number One above), but no one they work with has the same new skills and knowledge that they do. Without support, as a Lone Ranger, the new ideas they bring back may not get implemented due to peer resistance or ignorance.
What You Can Do
•Give an entire work group training in new information and skills at the same time. (Whenever possible and appropriate.)
•Build training that is linked to the problems at work as well.
•Use real work in the training when possible.
The “Name That Tune” Game
This problem arises when, in the name of expediency or efficiency, training time is compacted. Trainers are asked to “Name That Tune” (or complete the training) in shorter and shorter time blocks. This show starts with “The Management Team only needs an overview”, and ends with training being designed to fit a time slot, as opposed to being designed to build specific skills. The typical result of the “Name That Tune - shorten the session for my people Game”, is training that is little more that exposure to a topic area - not training which can transfer real skills, with real practice time in the classroom.
What You Can Do
•Give the training staff some muscle - let them be strong advocates for training thatis skill based, and not just meant to fill the ever-shortening time slot.
•Determine clear performance outcomes for the effort up front.
Final Thoughts
Training can be expensive, often time consuming, and disappointing - both to the individuals and to the organization. Training and learning is also vitally important to the success of organizations. These Seven Reasons are often why training is so disappointing and time consuming. Taking the actions listed will help reduce the cost, lower the frustration and disappointment and drastically increase the effectiveness of the training in your organization.
MLB 2nd Half Outlook
Posted by admin - August 17th, 2008
American League:
East: The Yanks and Red Sox will battle it out (again) for the East title, but with a twist this yr. The team that finishes 2nd doesn’t get the Wild Card. Yankees take the division in the final weekend of the season.It’ll be a longjam with The Twins, Indians, Rangers, and possibly Oakland in the WC race. The O’s will continue to fade and finish under .500
Central: White Sox will hang on to the division, but not before getting a scare from Minnesota. White Sox win the division by 3 or 4 games. Twins get the Wild Card
West: Angels keep Rangers and A’s at bay, and coast to the title by 7 or 8 games.
National League:
East: Braves overtake the Nats in late Aug/early Sept as their pitchers get healthy. Braves take division by 4 or 5 games. Marlins make a mad dash at the end, but come up short (2nd place), but capture the Wild Card. Phils and Mets fade.
Central: Bold prediction here…Cards take division by 20 games!!! Cubs and Stros tese their fans by staying in the Wild Card hunt, but fall short in September.
West; Padres slowly but surely pull away, as the D Backs and Dodgers continue play up and down baseball. Pads win by about 10 or 12 games. Bonds comes back late in the year to keep the fans interested in SF, but they’ll be way back by then.
Playoffs:
1st round Yanks eliminate Twins (AGAIN)
Angels beat White Sox in a hard fought series
Cards beat Marlins
Braves beat Pads
2nd round:
Angels take Yanks in 6.
Cards sweep Braves.
World Series:
St Louis wins the World Series in 6.
Storylines of the 2nd half: Pujols gets into the triple crown race vs. Lee. But Lee wins batting title, while Albert takes the HR and RBI crown.
Sosa, Bonds, and Clemens retire at the end of the season.
Dieting Will Never Be the Same! A Review of “How to Make Your Diet Work”
Posted by admin - August 12th, 2008
According to the American Obesity Association, an astounding 64.5 percent of adult Americans (about 127 million) are categorized as obese or overweight. According to the website’s statistics, obesity causes at least 300,000 excess deaths and is responsible for 100 million dollars in healthcare costs each year for obese and overweight Americans. A very real and often devastating problem for so many, obesity should be considered a healthcare crisis and given the utmost attention.
And one would think that with all the fad diets and personal weight loss programs promoting quick and easy weight loss that those numbers would be much lower or at least in decline. The problem is that Americans are fat. And we are getting fatter. Diet after diet comes along and yet we can’t seem to lose the weight and keep it off. Is there a solution, finally , to the crisis?
According to Dr. Michael Smith there is, and it has to do with focus. Perhaps everyone has been attacking the wrong problem.
In his ebook entitled, How to Make Your Diet Work, Dr. Smith, a graduate of UT Southwestern Medical School in Dallas, Texas, believes that the challenge facing the overweight person is not losing weight. Rather, the problem is in gaining weight. He states adamantly that for too long we have focused research and product development on the “how to lose weight problem” when we should have been focusing on the factors that make people gain weight in the first place.
According to Dr. Smith, the typical overweight person tries the latest fad diet. Most fad dietsl promote quick weight loss through an initial, drastic reduction in calories, carbohydrates, or fat. There is some initial success, but the drastic change in food intake causes the body to go into a state that Smith calls Diet Shock.
Diet Shock is when the body has suddenly been deprived of it’s usual intake of food (calories, carbohydrates, etc.) and then begins to store energy as fat at a higher rate to compensate for the loss. In other words, the body thinks it is starving, so it goes to work to turn what is left as well as future intake into fat so the body won’t be lacking.
This is what Smith believes to be the crucial problem. For example, in a typical fad diet a dieter drastically reduces her intake of carbohydrates for two weeks or some period of time . They see initial success by losing a few pounds, but then usually hit a weight loss barrier. They then give up and go back to their old ways. They then cycle back to their former weight. Then at some point in the future, they try another diet and repeat the process over and over again.
This cycle, often called yo-yo dieting, is not only an ineffective way to lose weight and keep it off, but it is also hazardous to the health of those who are on and off the diets. Unfortunately, the fad diets are responsible, albeit unintentionally, for the yo-yo dieting which leads to frustration, a sense of failure, and continued obesity.
Dr. Smith has been working in the field of diet and nutrition for several years. He wrote Make Your Diet Work to reveal a revolutionary way of thinking based on his years of interaction with his patients and his research. The main idea of his work is that anyone can lose weight and actually keep it off no matter which diet program you use.
In other words, whether you use a low carb, or low cal, or low fat approach, Make Your Diet Work will show you how to make that diet work for you by maximizing the diet’s strengths and minimizing its weaknesses. He will help you lose weight using the diet you choose, and the principles illustrated in Make Your Diet Work will also help you keep weight off… for good.
Make Your Diet Work accomplishes this through what Dr. Smith calls Five Simple Science Solutions. Implement these solutions and use them with the diet of your choice, and you will be successful he says. And each solution helps prevent weight regain. What are they?
First, to make your diet work and prevent weight regain, you must stabilize an active metabolic rate. Simply put, Dr. Smith shows the dieter how to increase your metabolic rate and as a result increase the rate your body burns fat.
Second, the dieter must sustain a negative energy balance. This solution gives the dieter ways to create and sustain a negative energy balance. Weight regain will occur as long as you have a positive energy balance (when you aren’t burning more calories than you are taking in).
The third solution attacks the problem of false or faux weight loss. Most diets today lead to your body burning more protein (muscle) than fat. So those initial pounds that come off do not constitute healthy weight loss. You are losing muscle and not fat (or perhaps volume depletion is occurring). In any event losing muscle is unhealthy. This solution will help you sustain and even increase your muscle mass while burning fat.
Fourth, Dr. Smith effectively and succinctly attacks the problem of food cravings. He asserts that people do not fail diets because they do not lose weight. They fail diets because they regain the weight they lost. By curbing cravings, especially those that occur in the middle of the day, a major contributing factor in weight regain has it’s legs cut out from underneath it and is rendered ineffective.
Lastly, the fifth solution gives the dieter the know how to implement a weight maintenance program. Without a weight maintenance plan, which is where most diets fail according to Dr. Smith, the dieter will not keep the weight off. Solution five leads the dieter to an ongoing diet of 40% protein, 30% carbohydrates, and 30% fat.
One thing that permeates Make Your Diet Work is Dr. Smith’s firm belief that all weight loss should be healthy weight loss and should occur without inducing Diet Shock. There is NOTHING drastic, unhealthy, or expensive in Make Your Diet Work. It should give the dieter a sense of comfort and confidence in knowing that a medical doctor, trained at one of the most highly respected medical schools in the world, designed this plan with the reader’s overall health in mind, not just producing fast weight loss results.
When you purchase Make Your Diet Work, you will notice quickly that this is not just another fad diet program. Far from it. The Five Simple Science Solutions can be used with the diet of your choice. So Smith is not trying to decry any diet on the market. Instead, he gives very clear action steps that enable you to modify easily your diet of choice, making it safer and far more successful in the long run.
And don’t think you’re going to have to do lots of study and conversions and extrapolations to figure out how to do this. Nor will you need to purchase memberships, special foods, nor additional books. Dr. Smith has included easy-to-read charts which tell you exactly what you need to do to make your diet work.
In addition, Dr. Smith has included a Diet Mentor, a sort of interactive diet coach. The Diet Mentor summarizes key principles, reduces some of the more difficult ideas to easy-to-understand action steps, easily links back to the main volume by simply pointing and clicking on topic you want to review, and provides some encouragement along the way. The Mentor can be used as a sort of quick reference help as well.
There is another powerful and user friendly tool Dr. Smith has developed for you that comes with Make Your Diet Work. Suppose you haven’t chosen one of the popular diets or you don’t even know where to begin. Then you can use the step-by-step, point and click guide that so easily assists you in setting up your own diet plan instead of using one of the fad diets on the market today. Again, Dr. Smith has provided you with the tool you need.
Just click on whether you want a Three Week or Five Week initial startup plan. Then you will be guided to click on either a low carb, low cal, or low fat plan. Then choose the method of how you will work on establishing a higher metabolic rate. Do you want to use resistance training or a walking program? You continue to point and click along these lines until you have set up your own customized diet plan.
And you can rest assured that it is a plan that is designed to help you lose weight, avoid Diet Shock, prevent Weight Regain, and do it all in a manner that is safe and effective.
Now, when you purchase and download Make Your Diet Work, you will have to wade through a minimal amount of scientific jargon. But no more that you would normally expect from a physician. After all, they aren’t always known for their bedside manner. But in my opinion, working through these sections that attempt to illustrate the scientific underpinnings of what Smith is trying to say is more than worth the effort. You don’t have to understand the jargon. All you have to do is follow the Five Simple Solutions!
The only other thing Dr. Smith could have added to Make Your Diet Work is an expanded list of resources for the dieter. Specifically, obese and overweight people who have tried diet after diet could use a guide that leads them to different forums and support groups which are often crucial to long term weight loss success.
But those are minor deficiencies in a work that, in my opinion, constitutes a welcome paradigm shift in the way we should think about and approach dieting and the obesity problem. It’s not about losing weight. It’s about a healthy diet and lifestyle that keeps the weight off!
Make Your Diet Work is listed at www.weight-loss-professional.com/make-your-diet-work.html for $24.99 with a 30-day, money-back-guarantee. Keep in mind that what the dieter gets includes the main volume (which includes sound recordings throughout by Dr. Smith himself), the Diet Mentor, the Diet Planner (which helps you set up your own customized low cal, low carb, or low fat plan), and two other ebooks which are definitely must reads.
One, entitled Diet Deception, deals with deceptive internet marketing in the health, diet, fitness, and nutrition world. The other ebook, entitled Double Down, gives the reader concrete and specific ways to develop better and more consistent sleep patterns which will exponentially improve your chances of losing weight and keeping it off.
In addition the buyer will get the benefit of future upgrades and additions, as well as a year’s worth of Medical Alerts and Cooking and Recipe tips sent directly to his or her email inbox each week.
As always, consult your physician before beginning any diet program. If you or someone you know needs to get serious about losing weight, I unreservedly recommend Make Your Diet Work. Dieting will never be the same again, and I am glad!
Understanding Financial Statements
Posted by admin - August 10th, 2008
The value of the accurate financial statements generated is undisputed. This is as financial statements are like windows into the health of a company. Just by viewing financial statements, adept business owners will be able to determine the strengths and weaknesses at the time that the statement was generated. With this, the owner can then chart the way into the future for the company, by addressing the weaknesses and capitalizing on the strengths that the company has.
The two main financial statements within any company are the balance sheet and the Profit and Loss statements. The balance sheet provides anyone with a snapshot of the assets and liabilities within a company at any one point in time. This essentially means that the balance sheet shows what the company has and how much they own others. Apart from that, the equation asset = liabilities + capital always holds true within a balance sheet. The liabilities and capital sections indicate the sources of funds for the company while the assets indicate how the company uses the funds that it has. Most importantly, the liability and capital sections indicate money owed to creditors as well as invested amount. If you look closely, you will realize that both of these are obligations of the company that need to be paid.
By analyzing financial ratios that are generated by numbers on a balance sheet, a business owner is able to tell how well the company collects their accounts receivables, how fast the inventory is moving out and replenished, as well as how much exposure the company has towards debt.
The typical company balance sheet will consist of fixed assets and current assets such cash, account receivables, inventory and note receivables. Current assets comprise of assets that can be liquidated fairly quickly and easily in order to be turned into cash. On the other hand, fixed assets are amortized over an extended period of time and are not so easily sold to recover cash.
On the liability section, fixed liabilities include long-term debt of usually more than 12 months of age or contingent liabilities. The current liabilities however are represented by mainly accounts payable and notes payable as well as short term loans. If there is inadequate cash within the company, current liabilities have the ability to drag the company down.
The final element of the balance sheet, the Equity is the amount of capital financing that has been injected into the company. With this, the owner’s investment into the business is shown in the balance sheet.
The Profit and Loss statement is used to determine if a company is making a profit or a loss within a specified operations period. The revenue obtained in a period is stated in this statement, and all direct and indirect costs incurred are deducted from the revenue. With this, the profit for that period is obtained, where profits are compared with the previous year’s performance level. Profits with which taxation has not yet been accounted for are known as gross debt, while net profits are debt in which all costs have been deducted from.
In conclusion, being able to read financial statements is an advantage for any business owner. Interpreting financial statements are ever important in business, as it allows for the owner to take action before things become worse. By reading financial ratios, a business owner will know what needs to be done before the situation of the company changes. Alternatively, reading financial ratios will also help the business owner plan for the future, by incorporating the leverage on existing strengths of the company.
The Psychology of Weight Loss: Part 1 - The INSIDE OUT Mindset
Posted by admin - August 6th, 2008
WHAT DOES BEING FIT REALLY MEAN?
The “INSIDE-OUT” approach to fitness differs from that of conventional wisdom. Most programs work on diet and exercise alone. They give suggestions on what foods to eat through recipes, calorie-counting books, and exercise tips. While this way may work in the short run, eventually your motivation and desire to get in better shape disappears. In order to change your attitude and these unwanted behaviors, there are three things to learn about yourself:
How and what motivates you?
What are the reasons behind your unwanted behaviors?
What kind of support system is good for you?
The “INSIDE-OUT” approach is an on-going process. In theory, it is a simple common sense idea. In practice, it will take some hope, a little faith in yourself, and patience.
The goal is for you to develop a lifestyle that reflects this way of thinking.
You cannot sustain motivation to be active without pure motives.
You cannot change unwanted behaviors without knowing the reasons behind them.
You cannot stay focused without outside support.
You cannot eat smarter without a proper attitude toward food.
You cannot continue to be active without deep desires.
In a Nut Shell:
The “INSIDE-OUT” concept takes a look at your exercise and eating behaviors through a cognitive awareness approach. It deals with your motives, desires, and beliefs toward exercise and food. If you want to change attitudes and habits toward exercise and eating for the long haul, you are going to have to dig deep into WHY you feel the way you do about them. This will not be easy and it will take hard work.
I commend you for reading this; however, the reason you are is because you are not happy with who you are right now and how you feel. Twenty years ago I did not either. However, after changing from the INSIDE OUT, I today feel better than anytime in my life. And thousands of others have changed to by applying this approach. You are not alone. Let me help!
