VoIP (Voice over internet protocol) represents the next generation of Phone services. The VoIP technology uses a high speed internet connection (such as DSL or cable) rather than a traditional phone line, for the transmission of voice signals. The use of this technology costs significantly less than the use of traditional phone lines. Think of it as having to send a document to someone by fax versus sending the same document by e-mail. Which option is cheaper? The cost of faxing a document depends on where you’re faxing it to and how many pages you’re faxing (and therefore how long you’ll use the phone line). E-mailing the document costs the same thing regardless of where you’re e-mailing it to and how many pages you’re e-mailing. The same applies to VOIP.

There are several providers currently offering VOIP phone services such as Vonage, lingo and packet8 among others. The calling plans range in price from $10 to $30 a month. Most have unlimited long distance calling and free features such as call waiting, caller ID, voicemail, etc without additional costs. The cost advantage of VOIP is such that traditional phone providers such as Verizon and AT&T have already begun to offer VOIP phone services which also cost significant less than their regular plans. Therefore, the VolP technology is set to bring lower prices and improved services to the consumer as a result of more competition.

There are generally three kinds of VOIP calling:

1)_ATA (Analog telephone adaptors): your phone is plugged into special router which is in turn connected to the internet. This router converts analog signals from your phone into digital packets of data which can then be sent through a high speed internet connection. If the person you’re calling also has VOIP, these packets of data travel exclusively through the internet all the way to the other side of the line. If you’re calling a regular phone, then a part of the journey must be made through regular phone lines. That’s why there is a cost involved. It is this kind of VOIP that providers such as Vonage, lingo, packet8 and others rely in order to provide their services. Because your “voice” travels mostly through the internet the cost of the calls is much lower, and therefore the calling plans are much cheaper.

2)_IP(internet protocol) phones: these phones look exactly like standard phones, but instead of connecting to a normal phone cable, they connect to an Ethernet cable which in turn plugs directly into your router or broadband modem. This way the conversion of your voice into digital packets of data happens inside the phone, rather than in a VOIP router.

3)_ Computer to computer: this is currently the most popular kind of VOIP calling. Computer programs such as Skype, allow you to talk to anyone anywhere in the world for free! All that is needed is a microphone and a speaker on each of the computers. Since this technology uses exclusively the internet connection to get from one end of the line to the other, there is no cost for the user. It’s like exchanging e-mails messages, except that packets of data containing voice rather than words are traveling through the internet. For a small fee, these programs also allow you to make calls to regular phones

One good feature of VOIP is that you’re not tied to a particular area code. Suppose you live in New York but most of your friends and family live in Los Angeles. You could choose to have an area code from Los Angeles added to your phone, so that all the calls that originate in LA count as local calls rather than long distance calls. That way, your friends and family pay only for a local call even though they’re calling you from across the country.

Battery-Powered-Tools, How to Get the Most From Them

I remember a few years ago one of the sales people at my local hardware store told me they were expecting the arrival of new battery powered circular saw, I think it was a Makita. On hearing the phrase “battery powered circular saw”, I laughed out loud and told him to call me when the battery powered table saws arrive. Within a couple of years I had purchased one of those battery powered circular saws that I so willingly scoffed at just a couple of years earlier. I soon discovered that having portable tools had huge benefits. That’s why companies like Porter-Cable, Makita, Delta and others have focused on these areas.

These days battery powered tools are available is drills, drivers, impact drivers, routers, jig saws, portable planers, circular saws, reciprocating saws and chop saws, and even Ryobi has battery powered chain saw that works well for big jobs that other tools can’t handle. So to see how to get the most from these tools.

Lets stop for a moment and look at batteries that power these units. Most power packs that drive these tools are a series of small rechargeable batteries all wired together to give the optimum power. These rechargeable batteries are very similar to the flashlight batteries that you buy for your TV clicker and garage door opener and various other home products.

The difference between rechargeable batteries like Duracel and Eveready, are that the rechargeables have higher quality shells and consist of slightly different components to make them safe to recharge. The rechargeable batteries that are wired together are normally nickle cadmium (nicad) 1.2 volt batteries. When they are wired together in series … 8 together equals 9.6 volt, 10 together equals 12.2 volt, 12 together equals 14.4 and so on. That is how more power is generated, more little batteries, more power, and of course, more weight.

The more batteries that are wired together, the greater the torque (or twisting power) of the tool. Torque is created by a combination of horse power and speed, and high speed does not necessarily mean high power. Conversely high power does not necessarily come with high speed..

You will find another type of battery on the market called a “nickle-metal-hydride” (Ni-MH). These batteries use compounds that give the batteries a slightly longer life (they also cost a bit more to purchase). Some contractors prefer tools that will give them longer battery life which is the reason for this more advanced rechargeable battery version.

As woodworkers, we all know one thing, HEAT is our greatest enemy. When saw blades get too hot they lose their tensility and become dull, screws that are driven into hardwoods can snap because of the high heat created by friction, and heat can burn out the electric motors of our machinery if we are not careful. Heat is also the enemy of batteries. All batteries heat up when they are being recharged. The larger battery packs such as 18 volts and larger tend to heat up even more because there are so many batteries in the packs and they don’t have heat dispersion characteristics as smaller packs because there are so many batteries next to one another. Batteries tend not to take a charge when they are hot, so keeping the ambient temperature normal to cool is a benefit.

On the flip side, batteries do not do well in cold either. Once the temperature drops below 14 degrees Fahrenheit ( minus 10 Celsius) batteries do not perform well (if at all). Most batteries will lose their power when the temperature gets this low.

The recharging of batteries is a bit of a mystery to a many people. The tendency is to keep batteries fully charged all the time. In truth, batteries need to be exercised in order to keep them in top shape. This means they should be fully discharged every few months, then fully re-charged. “Topping” up battery charges will make the batteries lose their effectiveness, and after a time they will only take a partial charge because that is what they have become accustomed to. This means they will lose their ability to use the full charge. If your older cordless device is doing this, sometimes you can rejuvenate the battery by charging and FULLY discharging it several time.

My old 9.6 Craftsman portable drill, which is now 10 years old has been one of the best tools I have ever owned. I have no idea how many screws it has driven, holes it has bored or blades it has ground, but it’s batteries have almost given up now. I checked on the price of new batteries and it will be more cost effective for me to upgrade to a whole new unit … but I have no intention of getting a big hulking unit, with tons of power, I don’t need it and I refuse to pack around all that battery weight, so I am currently investigating some 12 volt units and looking forward to another 10 years of service from my new drill, and when I need more power, I always have my trusty plug-in drill, and the hassle of extension cords that goes with it.

    How to write emails that get results!

    Writing an effective email that gets the result you were looking
    for is not as simple as just opening up your email software and
    hitting the keyboard with your fingers.

    Writing an email that gets results is an art form - get it right
    and it is read effortlessly by the reader. Get it wrong and it
    reflects really badly on you.

    So if I have just ONE tip to pass on to you it would be this:

    When writing your emails throw everything you learnt in
    English classes out the window!

    Instead, use the following tips to make sure that your
    communication is as powerful and effective as it can be:

    1. Personalise: People love to see their name. So personalise
    your email to them. Even if you are sending out a bulk email to
    many different people, there are software tools that allow you
    to personalise each and every email so that it looks as though
    it has come direct from you and direct to them — one-to-one.

    2. Write just like you talk: Use plain, easy to understand
    English. Nobody cares if you can use xenophobia and ostentatious
    in the same sentence. Write almost like you are talking to your
    best mate over a beer. So that means use contractions. Be
    friendly and personable in your writing.

    3. Put passion in your email: Since you don’t have the luxury of
    seeing your prospect eye-to-eye to gauge their reactions you
    need to put extra passion into your message. Even if you think
    you are overdoing it when you write, your email will seem
    understated when it gets read. Get enthusiastic!

    4. Write to one person: Especially important when you are
    writing an email that will be sent to more than one person, try
    to think of the ideal prospect/client as you are writing and
    make the message just for them. Even if the message will be read
    by thousands of people, every person will read it one at a time.
    Use “you” and “your” liberally. Focus on them, not yourself.

    5. Keep your sentences and paragraphs short: Keep your sentences
    and paragraphs short and simple.

    Period.

    Sentences (even paragraphs) can even be one word like that last
    one. And paragraphs should be no more than 4 or 5 lines. You
    want your email to look easy to read with lots of white space.
    Make it inviting. Long blocks of words are scary. Paragraph
    breaks do NOT need to be determined by content.

    6. Use plenty of compelling subheads: Subheads should be like
    mini-headlines. Use them to break up large bodies of text and to
    bring people back into the body of the email.

    A lot of people will scan your email so you need to make your
    subheads give a complete selling message by themselves. Also, be
    sure to use different graphic embellishments.

    7. Eliminate excess wording: Simplify. Convey your message in a
    clear and concise manner — but remember that doesn’t mean ‘keep
    it short’.

    My personal guru of direct marketing, Ted Nicholas, repeatedly
    states that copy can never be too long, just too boring . All
    things considered equal, longer copy will always outperform
    shorter copy, AS LONG AS the copy is compelling and not boring.
    And you need to ruthlessly edit your email for flow.

    8. Use action verbs whenever possible: If you see too many “as”,
    “is”, “was” or “were” replace them. Sentences using action verbs
    are more powerful.

    When writing your email you want it clear enough so that any
    high school student can understand it. Now, you probably think
    that your prospects/clients are a lot smarter than the average
    high school student. But nobody has time anymore to sit down and
    figure out what you’re trying to say — so keep your writing
    simple and straightforward.

    Oh, and go through your text and cut out the word “that”
    wherever you possibly can. It’s a ‘dead’ word that reduces the
    impact of any sentence.

    Or you might like to read the above sentence as: It’s a dead
    word and reduces the impact of any sentence.

    Is Estate Planning for Everyone?

    Many people think they don’t need an estate plan.
    They relate the term to tax planning and feel that
    their estate is not big enough to bother. They
    therefore think estate planning has nothing to do
    with them.

    But estate planning is more than a method to avoid
    or reduce estate taxes. Many young families might
    be surprised to learn they should think about estate
    planning now.

    Right now there is an effort to abolish or confine
    estate taxes to only the very wealthy. Of course,
    Congress changes the tax laws constantly, so there
    can be no guarantee that this trend will continue.

    Be even a normal working class couple with a home,
    two cars, money in retirement or 401K plans and
    maybe the start of a college for their children can
    have a surprisingly large estate. So even if estate
    taxes don’t apply today, they may in the future.

    Estate planning can be used to distribute your
    taxable estate in such a way that taxes are
    minimized. There are all sorts of ways to do this
    and, if you are wealthy enough, your financial
    planners and attorneys should be working together
    to do this for you.

    For the rest of us, estate planning is less involved
    with taxes and more with who inherits your estate;
    who cares for your minor children; how you feel
    about life support measures; or who will control
    your affairs if you are unable to.

    Your estate is all you possessions - savings, home,
    car, investments etc. If you have a will, your
    estate will be distributed according to your wishes.
    If you don’t, they will be distributed under state
    intestate laws.

    You would have to check the laws in your state, but
    there could be cases that if you die without a will,
    your parents would inherit your property, not your
    wife or your money could go to distant cousins and
    not to your lifelong companion.

    So the first reason for a will is to have your property
    distributed according to your wishes. If you want to
    leave your money to the Salvation Army and not your son,
    this is the way to do it.

    Many parents use estate planning to try to rein in their
    out-of-control children. They may provide for a bequest
    that starts at an age when the child has hopefully matured,
    say 35. Or they may make provisions that if their daughter
    is divorced, no money would pass to the ex-husband.

    More commonly, grandparents use estate planning tools to
    provide for all or part of their grandchildren’s’ college
    education or choose to bypass their family and leave their
    money to their favorite charity.

    Or a business owner could pass his business to his partners
    or employees in order to keep the business running.

    A common use of estate planning is to name subsequent
    beneficiaries. For example, your spouse would inherit your
    art collection on your death and on her death it would go
    to a museum.

    Another reason for estate planning through a will is to
    appoint guardians for minor children or disabled relatives
    you are now caring for. If you are leaving a bequest in
    your will or the proceeds of an insurance policy (which is
    generally not part of your estate) to a minor or person
    unable to look after his own affairs, you also need to
    appoint someone to manage, conserve, invest and dole out
    this money for the care of the minor or incapacitated person.

    If you are ill or facing the prospect of losing your ability
    to control your own affairs, you can use estate planning
    techniques like a durable power of attorney, property
    transfers or adding a trusted friend or relative as joint
    owner of your property and bank accounts.

    You can also provide for a living will, directing how far
    you want life support measures to go if you are terminally
    ill.

    So estate planning is more than leaving your grandmother’s
    watch to your daughter.

    The proceeds of most life insurance policies and jointly held
    property with rights of survivorship are not generally part of
    the probate estate. Many people believe that they can use
    these devices instead of a will.

    However, only the specific property held jointly is transferred
    to the surviving owner. For example your house would be transferred,
    but not any of your separately held investments.

    Also problems arise if there is concurrent death, e.g an auto
    accident that kills the husband and wife.

    There can also be adverse tax consequences to passing your property this way.

    They are so many different situations and methods of estate planning, it is best left in the hands of a professional, in this case an estate lawyer working alone or in conjunction with your financial planner.

    Simple wills are not expensive and can be drawn with the help of advice books or computer software programs.

    But if you have to go beyond simple, hire the right professionals.

    Estate planning is a complex field. If you have more than a house,
    car and banking account that you want your wife to get on your
    death, you should consult a qualified estate planning attorney.

    Abraham Maslow said, “If the only tool you have is a hammer, every problem looks like a nail.” As managers, leaders and change agents, we want to improve our organizational performance. Often training is seen as an important tool in this pursuit. Training is a fabulous tool! It can provide awareness, knowledge, skills and maybe even a chance to practice. However, all of our change efforts aren’t nails, so training isn’t our only tool. This special report identifies seven common reasons why training doesn’t meet it’s goals - even when it is the right tool - and more importantly - gives you some action steps to avoid these pitfalls.


    The “Who’s Accountable?” Game
    People rarely are held accountable for using what they learned in a course or workshop when they get back to the workplace. So some people recognize going to training as a game. That’s why training is seldom seen (by anyone in the organization) as what it could and should be - a strategic part of the business, with responsibility for performance enhancement. Regardless of how training is viewed, if people aren’t held accountable, how likely is it that real performance change will occur? All of the actions below will make accountability clear.

    •Give people a clear message before participating in training what the expectations of them will be when they return.

Whether true or not, the prevalent perception in the organization is that there is no rhyme or reason to the latest training course. This cause is called “Course du Jour” because often organizations offer new training just like some people try new diets. New business books (and accompanying “hot” new training topics) are published with the frequency of new diet plans - and the similarities continue! With the fad popular diets, people hear about the new approach, buy the book, get excited, try the diet, and soon leave it - usually before they received any real benefit. The same thing happens in an organization. The new training topic, approach, idea or craze is tried and dropped before results can occur.. There’s usually nothing wrong with the training introduced, but usually it isn’t supported in the organization - or given the time to work. In these instances, the company is wasting time and money and confusing the majority of the employees. Maybe most costly however is the risk of fostering cynicism and reducing the credibility of leadership.


    What You Can Do


    •Make training decisions based on strategic direction and real performance gaps. Once those training priorities have been set, stick to them.
    •Make a commitment to get a return on that training investment.
    •Resolve to give the training time and support to work.
    •Determine clear performance outcomes for the effort up front.
    •When a new “hot topic” training course is proposed, ask, “How does this fit with what we’ve been doing? Is this just our next diet?”
    •Use real work in the training when possible.


    The Piling on the Work Paradigm
    Many times managers and leaders see training as an expensive waste of time. When they attend classes, they continually think about all the work that is piling up “back in the office”. Their employees see this attitude through their leader’s actions. This thinking grows because leaders don’t explain the reasons for the course and don’t help people deal with the workload while they are gone. Since you can’t make people learn, these situations can be disastrous in the training session itself. People may resent having to be in the training because they don’t understand why they’re there, and they know they’ll have to work harder when they get back to the job to catch up. In this situation the participants may leave more cynical than when they arrived, with few if any new skills to counteract that possible effect.


    What You Can Do


    •Do everything possible to make sure all of management is on-board with the training and its purpose.
    •Make a commitment to get a return on that training investment.
    •Resolve to give the training time and support to work.
    •Determine clear performance outcomes for the effort up front.
    •Set up a plan to handle the work while the participant is learning. This action speaks volumes about the importance of the training. It will also improve their ability to focus on the session (e.g. “My critical work is being handled”, and “Whew, I’m sure glad that most of my mail will have been handled when I get back!”)


    The January Third Application Assignment
    Well designed training with motivated learners will result in people leaving training with some clear ideas about how they plan to apply what they’ve learned back on the job. But well intentioned as those plans might be, they may be no more effective than most New Year’s Resolutions. Old habits are hard to break! Habits are especially hard to break when there is no support for the new skills and behaviors back in the workplace.


    What You Can Do


    •Give people a clear message before participating in training what the expectations of them will be when they return.
    •Plan some time with the participant both before and after the training session.
    •Let them know before they attend, that an action plan is expected as a result of the training session. (Then be interested in the outcome.)
    •Ask them how you can help them reach their new performance goals. All of these actions will make accountability clear.
    •Give an entire work group training in new information and skills at the same time. (Whenever possible and appropriate.)
    •Use real work in the training when possible.


    The Sleepwear Syndrome - “One-Size-Fits-All”
    Often times a T-shirt or sleepwear is designed to be “one size-fits-all” and serves its purpose. Training isn’t sleepwear and probably won’t be effective that way. Look at it this way: though all the teen-age kids might wear one size of sweatshirt to school, would people wear the same size suit or skirt to work? If they did, would they look as good or perform well? In other words, one-size-fits-all garments aren’t all that versatile for different situations. The basic goal of clothing - to cover our body and provide warmth - would be achieved, but many other reasons why we wear clothing would not be satisfied. The same is true for training in the workplace. Too often, generic, across-the-board training is administered. The basic premise with this syndrome is that “We’ll give it to everyone - to be fair - maybe everyone doesn’t need this information or lack the skills, but at least we will make sure we don’t leave anyone out.” In reality often management doesn’t really know who needs the new skills and knowledge.


    What You Can Do


    •Base training and participation decisions on skills needed to be effective in the workplace.


    The Lone Ranger Situation
    Often people are sent to training as a perk, a reward, or as a way to get them in a new surrounding for awhile. In most cases, people in a team or work group may never all see the same training, except for the “Course du Jour” or “One-Size-Fits-All” variety. Some times people need specific skills to perform a specific part of their work. Often though, the “perk” training workshops are for skills many people in the group could use (or maybe they’ll all be sent over-time; after all, everyone can’t be gone at once.) The result? People come back to work in a vacuum. Not only are they not accountable (Reason Number One above), but no one they work with has the same new skills and knowledge that they do. Without support, as a Lone Ranger, the new ideas they bring back may not get implemented due to peer resistance or ignorance.


    What You Can Do


    •Give an entire work group training in new information and skills at the same time. (Whenever possible and appropriate.)
    •Build training that is linked to the problems at work as well.
    •Use real work in the training when possible.


    The “Name That Tune” Game
    This problem arises when, in the name of expediency or efficiency, training time is compacted. Trainers are asked to “Name That Tune” (or complete the training) in shorter and shorter time blocks. This show starts with “The Management Team only needs an overview”, and ends with training being designed to fit a time slot, as opposed to being designed to build specific skills. The typical result of the “Name That Tune - shorten the session for my people Game”, is training that is little more that exposure to a topic area - not training which can transfer real skills, with real practice time in the classroom.


    What You Can Do


    •Give the training staff some muscle - let them be strong advocates for training thatis skill based, and not just meant to fill the ever-shortening time slot.
    •Determine clear performance outcomes for the effort up front.


    Final Thoughts
    Training can be expensive, often time consuming, and disappointing - both to the individuals and to the organization. Training and learning is also vitally important to the success of organizations. These Seven Reasons are often why training is so disappointing and time consuming. Taking the actions listed will help reduce the cost, lower the frustration and disappointment and drastically increase the effectiveness of the training in your organization.
